5 Foods That Are Good For Teeth

In our previous blog (7 Foods That Damage Your Teeth http://jjteeth.co.za/7-foods-that-damage-your-teeth), we discussed the negative effects that some foods might have on teeth. Thankfully, there are a number of foods and beverages that have been proven to eliminate bacteria that causes plaque. Here are 5 of the most popular foods:

  1. Tea

Black and green teas consist of a compound called ‘Polyphenol’. Polyphenol slows the growth of bacteria in the mouth by destabilising the ability of bacteria to clump together and form plaque. Polyphenol is also able to fight halitosis and subdue bad breath.

  1. Cheese

Cheese is able to neutralize the plaque acid in the mouth, by increasing the saliva production which washes out bacteria. Cheese is also filled with calcium which mixes with plaque and sticks to the teeth, preventing acid from causing decay.

  1. Raisins

Raisins are naturally sweet and don’t contain any sucrose or table sugar. It is also a source of phytochemicals, which may decrease cavity-causing plaque bacteria. Some compounds in raisins also affect the growth of bacteria that is associated with gum disease.

  1. Milk

Milk is a huge source of calcium which is good for bones and teeth. Drinking a glass of milk after consuming sugar-sweetened food and beverages decreases the level of acid in the mouth. Acid may cause tiny lesions on the tooth enamel, while calcium and phosphate help to restore the minerals back into those lesions. Calcium also protects against periodontal disease.

However, adding milk to cereal makes the milk sweet and syrupy, which is bad for teeth.

  1. Cranberries

Just like tea, cranberries contain polyphenol which prevents plaque from sticking to the teeth, thus lowering the risk of cavities. Another compound found in cranberries, proanthocyanidins, disrupts enzymes that bacteria uses to build glucans. Without glucans, the bacteria in plaque becomes vulnerable.

Instead of snacking on sugary or acidic food throughout the day, eat the above mentioned foods in between meals to minimize the amount of acid that your teeth get exposed to. Regular brushing and flossing can help to prevent bacteria from turning into plaque, however, a regular dental visit may prevent and eliminate the risk of periodontal disease and other oral problems.
