Orthodontics | Improving your smile and your oral health
Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of orthodontic treatment is not only to improve the appearance of your smile, but also helps to keep your mouth healthy.
Orthodontic treatments – such as braces – help to straighten crooked teeth by gently pushing the teeth into alignment. It ensures that teeth fit the smile line correctly, and in doing so it keeps the mouth healthy. When teeth are crooked it can be harder to clean, putting you at risk of cavities and gum disease.
The best time to get orthodontic treatment is between the age of 10 and 14, because that is when your mouth is still growing, making it easier for teeth to be straightened. However, a patient can get braces at any age.
Braces consist of bands, wires and brackets, which can be placed on either side of the teeth (braces are commonly placed on the front of the teeth), gently moving the teeth into the right position to improve your bite. There are various types of braces. The most common braces are metal or plastic brackets attached to the front surface of the teeth. Lingual braces – the braces that are attached to the back of the teeth – are hidden from view, but harder to clean. For patients with lingual braces, it is recommended that they brush and floss their teeth after every meal to avoid food getting stuck between the brackets, causing stains, tooth decay and gum disease.
Invisalign braces have become the most popular form of orthodontic treatment. Invisalign braces are –as the name suggests – invisible. It’s a thin, plastic-like tooth mould that can be placed on the tooth and easily removed. Orthodontists in Cape Town have started using Invisalign braces for their patients.
