Treatments for nervous patients

Approximately four in every ten adults in South Africa are afraid of the dentist or suffer from dental anxiety. As a dental practice, we understand and empathise with these fears, however, we refuse to believe that these anxieties are barriers to getting the treatment that you need for the smile that you deserve. Therefore, we offer sedation dentistry to our patients to help them overcome their fears.

There are a plethora of reasons why people are afraid of the dentist. Some of these reasons stem from a bad experience during childhood, while other causes include triggering panic by the sound of a drill or the sight of a needle. Some people may also find that their fears are compounded by their embarrassment towards the condition of their teeth and gums if they haven’t visited a dentist in years.

Sedation dentistry utilizes medication that helps patients to relax during dental procedures. The different levels of sedation includes:

  • Minimal sedation where you will be awake but completely relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation where your words may slur, and you won't remember much of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation where you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
  • General anaesthesia where you are completely unconscious

There are various ways to administer sedation dentistry, and we would be more than happy to discuss these options with our nervous patients, in a comfortable and relaxed environment, away from the dentist’s chair prior to your first appointment. However, some patients find that in-chair entertainment is enough to help them relax.

If you are a nervous patient and would like to schedule an appointment with a dentist who understands your concerns, contact a dentist in Cape Town.
