What is Gum Contouring?

If you are unhappy with your smile because your gums rest too high or too low on your teeth, gum contouring could be the best procedure for you. Gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves the reshaping of the gum line in order to even the gum line and improve the appearance of your smile.

There are a number of factors affecting the shape and size of gums. These factors include genetics, health problems or the consumption of certain prescription drugs. With gums that are too high, the underlying cause is usually gum recession, as the recession of the gums exposes the tooth’s root, causing the teeth to appear longer. Unfortunately, gum recession can lead to serious dental problems, such as decay and tooth loss, as well as a periodontal disease that caused the bone and structures of the tooth to deteriorate.

Gum contouring is considered to be a cosmetic dental procedure, and therefore it is not medically necessary, but rather a desire. However, some people undergo gum contouring surgery as part of other crucial periodontal procedures, such as pocket reduction, regenerative procedures, and crown lengthening.

Gum contouring surgery that is not done for cosmetic purposes usually involves the adding of gum tissue – when gum recession has occurred – and the trimming of excessive tissue that covers part of the tooth crown.
